Definitely

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33

How could God allow tragedy?  The answer is simple.  Sometimes people choose to do things outside of God’s plan.   They disregard the scripture... and plot to bring destruction, chaos, and hurt.  People have disobeyed God since the first two in the Garden of Eden...and for thousands of years thereafter.  It isn’t new or exclusive to this generation.  Freewill is wonderful.  It allows us to love God because we WANT to...not because we are forced to.  It’s genuine.  But this same freedom has a potentially dangerous side.  People can choose the other way.

But God tells us to take heart because He has overcome the world.  Will bad things happen here?  Yes.  Will God be here with us through it?  Definitely.

- Through His servants doing whatever it takes to comfort the mourning.  God is there.
- Through area churches providing counseling to the grieving. God is there.
- Through Christ-followers around the world that will spend a few extra minutes on their knees in deep prayer.  God is there.

We serve a God that knows anguish firsthand.  He has felt what you feel.  May His grace and strength continue to be with you as you persevere on the journey back to health. Take heart and know that you aren’t alone...  God is there.... He has overcome this world... and He loves you more than you’ll ever know.

Solving the Problem

Toward the end of the movie “Forrest Gump”, Forrest’s lifelong friend Jenny returns to the site of where she grew up.  Memories of her past abuse and neglect flood back into her mind... and she begins to pick up rocks and throw them at the walls of her old house.  Finally, Jenny quits throwing the stones and breaks down into sobs...

Forrest’s response?  “Sometimes there just aren’t enough rocks.”

Some of you reading this today have been hurt.  Deeply.  The kind of pain that makes you cry out when nobody’s looking and withdraw emotionally when nobody seems to understand.

God wants you to hear some words of comfort today.

Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

All the rocks in the world won’t solve the problem.  But God, the Savior, the Alpha and Omega hears your cries... and He wrote that verse for you.  You aren’t alone.  You do matter.  What happened in your past wasn’t something you deserved... it wasn’t something that you caused... and it wasn’t something you were meant to carry for the rest of your life.

Today, I invite you to take that burden and lay it down at the foot of the cross.  Jesus is strong enough to handle it... and is calling you to do so.  Don’t turn back to get it... leave it there.  Take that scenario that has been playing over and over in your mind and replace it with the words of today’s verse.

Or this verse:  Phil. 4:13  “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

Or this one: Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,”

Or lastly, this one:  Isaiah 40:31 “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles;  they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Take some time today, and allow God to comfort your soul, start to heal your wounds, and dry your eyes.

He’s the only Rock you’ll ever need.

Driving the Train

I heard a story about a train traveling through the night in a very violent rainstorm. The lightning flashes were almost blinding, the rain hitting the windows was deafening and the strong gust winds rocked the train from side to side. When the lightening flashed and lighted up the darkness, the passengers could see the rising water along the tracks. This created terror in the minds of the passengers. Several passengers noted that through all the noise, lightening and wind, one of the passengers, a little girl, seemed to be at perfect peace...

Nobody understood the reaction of that little girl.

When the storms hit your life... if you don’t panic, they won’t understand you either.  After all... aren’t we supposed to shake our fists at God...wondering where He is or why He hasn’t done something to improve our situation?  Aren’t we supposed to be scared of the lightning... cover our ears when it thunders... or run from the rising waters?  Aren’t we supposed to be terrified of what may happen?

Supposed to?  No.  Do we do it anyway?  Sometimes.

If you’re a Christian, when your life gets rocked... does your reaction look any different than those that don’t know Christ?  Fear. Panic. Worry. Doubt. Darkness. Hopeless. Helpless. Maybe God isn’t enough.  Maybe I can’t do it.  Maybe I’ve put my faith in God when it should have been faith in myself.  The devil will convince you that this is normal.  He’ll tell you that everybody falls apart when things come unglued.  After all, if God were even paying attention, He would have prevented the storm...

...right?

Let’s keep reading the story...

The adult passengers couldn’t figure out why the little girl was so calm during all this excitement. Finally, one passenger asked her, “How is that you can be so calm when all the rest of us are so worried about what might or could happen?” The little passenger smiled and said, “My father is the engineer.”

Her Father is the Engineer...and she wasn’t talking about the guy in the front car.   It wasn’t the guy shoveling coal into the engine... or the one pulling the whistle at the intersections.  Her Father created those guys.  And He died so that they could live eternally.  Your Heavenly Father runs things too.

He knows the track ahead and He knows what you’ve already passed.  He knows how fast to go and the perfect time to get where you are going.  He knows when it’s time to put on the brakes and when it’s time to stop entirely.

He has been down the tracks before...and He reminds us of it in His Word (emphasis mine):

But joyful are those who have the God of Israel as their helper,
whose hope is in the Lord their God.
 He made heaven and earth,
the sea, and everything in them.
He keeps every promise forever.”  Psalm 146:5-6

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world."  John 16:33

God has been there.  Felt it.  Seen it.  Been hurt by it.  Understands it.  Is not surprised by it.  Cares about it.  And has overcome it.

If you are a Christian, the One who drives the train of your life cannot be derailed, defeated, or destroyed.   He’ll never be surprised by circumstances or overwhelmed by the odds.  Jesus Christ willingly sacrificed the flesh He was bridled with so that you could live boldly... unafraid of the temporary and rejoicing in the eternal.  You were meant to see the world’s typical reaction to the unknown and refuse to blend in with those that have little faith.   No, you don’t have to quake and worry.... and just like that little girl, you know one VERY important fact that some others don’t:

Storms will come, but your Dad is the engineer.

You are in good hands.

Strong, loving, pierced hands.

Strength

“And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness.” - Romans 8:26a

I read the story of a 10-year-old boy who decided to study judo although he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master. He was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the master had taught him only one move. "Sensei," the boy finally said, "shouldn’t I be learning more moves?"

"This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know," the sensei replied. Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.

Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals. This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time-out. He was about to stop the match when the sensei intervened. "No," the sensei insisted, "Let him continue."

Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake: he dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament. He was the champion.  On the way home, the boy and the sensei reviewed every move. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind: "Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move?"

"You won for two reasons," the sensei answered. "First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm."

What the boy had seen as his biggest weakness had become his biggest strength.

You’ve lived with what you have perceived to be a weakness for a whole long time.  Anger, abuse, depression... divorced parents... migraines... OCD... doubt...

What are we supposed to do with our weaknesses?  The Bible has a reply.

“Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.”  2 Corinthians 12:9

Scripture tells us that when we are weak... God is strong.  We shouldn’t shy away from or blame away our weaknesses... but instead... recognize them and realize that those areas of our life are where God’s power will get us through.  Is God enough to get you through those depressing days?  Does He have enough power to help you come to terms with past abuse?  Can God REALLY heal?  Can you really trust Him?

Yes... He is more than enough... and He is always good... and He is always love... and He is never-changing... and He is forever faithful... and He is everywhere at one time... and He is the beginning and the end... and He loves you... and He will never stop... and He always knows what’s best... and He knew we’d be weak in some area... and He created us anyway... and He has a purpose for us... and He wants us to turn to Him when we run out of our own power.

God made you for a reason... weaknesses and all.

Don’t let the devil trick you into thinking you’re irreparably broken.  Leverage that part of your life and allow God to fill those dark spaces with light.  He doesn’t love you any less because you’ve had setbacks... you are His child and He loves you with the warm embrace of a father who cares.

Why do we have weaknesses?  To show God’s power in and through them.  And once we persevere through the trials... we are able to assist others through those same issues in their own lives.   We may be weak in the situation... but the pain becomes useful when we help others realize that they aren’t alone... and remind them that they will get through it... and that God still does what seems impossible.

Sounds like strength to me.

Strong Enough

Nothing is impossible through Christ.  Nothing.

That marriage that seems like there’s no hope.  Recovery is possible.  The low bank balance.  Replenishment is possible.  An uncontrollable teenager… a demanding boss… a medical setback?   All solvable.  All doable.  All possible through the One who promises that He will never leave nor forsake us.  (Deut. 31:8)

When we have no more stamina… He carries us.

When we are out of answers… He assures us that He has all that we’ll need.

When the world tells us we’re nothing… He reminds us that we are more than just something.   We’re a masterpiece.

His arms are strong enough for our heaviest burdens.

In 1 Peter 5, we read about God’s “mighty” hand!    No matter where we find ourselves today... God’s hand will be big enough.  He’ll cradle us with it when it hurts. He’ll provide for our needs with it.  We can grab it when we’re nervous and it will be there to protect us.

Today, don’t live limited by what you can carry in your own hand... give it to Him... He is more than strong enough.
